DP Technical is nothing more than a familiarisation course on the DP system for the professionals of the engine department of the vessel.

WHAT DOES IMCA SAY ABOUT TRAINING FOR ENGINE DEPARTMENT PROFESSIONALS?

It came about through the publication of IMCA M 117 which, as early as its first revision in February 2006, discussed in chapter 5 the training required for chief engineers, engineer officers and electricians. For the engine department, the document referred to the “DP Familiarization Course”, whose content was described in appendix 5 of IMCA M 117 rev 1.

Ten years after the first revision, in September 2016, the second revision was published. Its chapter 6 explains in greater detail the training for key DP engine personnel, above all as regards the distinction between training for electricians and for engineers. For the former it suggests the “DP Electrical and Electronics Technician Training Course”, with the content described in appendix 2 of IMCA M 117 rev 2, and for the latter the “DP Familiarization Course”, whose content was updated and can be found in appendix 3 of the same publication.

WHAT TRAINING DOES THE BRAZILIAN NAVY CURRENTLY REQUIRE?

In October 2019, the Brazilian Navy published Ordinance No. 373/DPC. This document sets out the requirement by the Brazilian maritime authority for training of technical engine personnel in compliance with the syllabus in appendix 3 of IMCA M 117 rev 2.
