The Competency Assessment was developed by the Technical Team of Vision Marine Training to meet the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements of IMCA M 117 – Training and experience of key DP personnel (Rev2), which states in item 10.2: - ”Regular performance appraisal and objective setting: in order to mitigate the risk of skill fade, key DP personnel involved in operations should undergo performance appraisal”.

The Competency Assessment was based on the DNV Standard (DNV-ST-0023 – DPO Competence Guidelines), on the International Guidelines for the Safe Operation of Dynamically Positioned Offshore Supply Vessels (IMCA MSF 182), on the knowledge requirements of IMCA M 117, on Competence Assurance and Assessment (IMCA C 002) and on the OCIMF Guide to DP Assurance (Framework Guidelines).

WHO NEEDS TO TAKE THE COMPETENCY ASSESSMENT?

All Deck and Engine personnel assigned to Dynamically Positioned vessels.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The Assessment can be taken in three ways:

THEORETICAL ASSESSMENT

The assessment is carried out through our e-learning platform or in person at our training centre.

The assessment consists of 70 multiple-choice and/or open questions. It measures the knowledge of the person assessed across different sections:

  • DP documentation, rules and legislation.
  • General DP concepts
  • DP systems, elements and components
  • DP control modes and operations
  • FMEA, DP TRIALS, CAM-ASOG, Risk Assessment
  • Power and Thruster Systems.

At the end of the exam, the Technical Team of Vision Marine Training marks it, assessing the answers of the crew member in depth, and issues a full report on competencies versus expectations according to the respective role on board.

Our report includes a SWOT analysis setting out all strengths, gaps, immediate actions to mitigate the gaps found, and a continuing professional development (CPD) plan for the crew member.

PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT (SIMULATOR)

The practical assessment is carried out on a simulator approved by The Nautical Institute for Dynamic Positioning Operator certification practice, with the aim of offering a realistic scenario for DP operations. The operator is expected to demonstrate competence in performing the tasks described in section 7 of IMCA M 117, following standard industry procedures.

Throughout the simulation, errors, failures and operational challenges are generated to give the operator opportunities to demonstrate knowledge in the following areas:

  • Operation of the dynamic positioning system;
  • Decision support tools (CAMO and ASOG);
  • Recognition of warnings, alarms and emergency procedures.
  • Decision-making under stress.

Failures will be introduced in the following vessel systems and sub-systems:

  • Heading sensors; • Generators; • Position Reference Systems; • Busbars; • Thrusters; • Controllers.

360º ASSESSMENT (THEORETICAL + PRACTICAL)

On the same day, the crew member takes the theoretical assessment and the simulated operation, generating a full report on their DP knowledge. The Competency Assessment is widely used by companies to assess promotion to a role or for new hires, providing a 360º analysis of the competencies of the crew member, with a complete SWOT analysis and gaps to be mitigated, as well as a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Plan.

WHO APPROVES OUR METHOD?

Many highly regarded and hugely important companies take the Assessment with us:

We carry out the competency assessment for entire fleets, always delivering assessments that are updated periodically, sending the full report within a short time, and being ready to offer support at any moment.

The highly qualified Instructor Team at Vision Marine Nautical Training Center is ready to carry out the complete Competency Assessment and to offer every solution, with the aim of contributing constantly to the improvement of the merchant navy and, increasingly, preventing DP position losses and reducing the number of collisions.
