About the DP Competence Assessment

Vision Marine Training’s DP Competence Assessment is a structured competence evaluation process for Dynamic Positioning Operators (DPOs) across three complementary levels: Theoretical, Practical and 360°. More than a test, it is a multidimensional analysis that measures the professional’s real ability to conduct DP operations with safety, technical proficiency and behavioural maturity. The Theoretical Level covers DP fundamentals, system architecture, redundancy, position reference sensors, failure modes and operational procedures. The Practical Level is conducted in a Full Mission DP simulator with realistic drive-off, drift-off, sensor failure and blackout scenarios, plus critical operations such as riser connection and proximity to installations. The 360° Level evaluates BRM communication, bridge leadership, decision-making under pressure and adherence to procedures. At the end, the contracting company receives an executive report with scoring by dimension, identified technical gaps and development recommendations.

Three Assessment Levels

The Assessment covers every dimension of DP operations — can be contracted as a full bundle or as a single level.

Level 1

Theoretical Assessment

Technical knowledge evaluation on DP fundamentals, system architecture, redundancy, position reference sensors, failure modes and operational procedures. Documented and auditable rubric.

Level 2

Practical Simulator Assessment

Operational evaluation in a Full Mission DP simulator with drive-off, drift-off, sensor failure, blackout scenarios and decision-making under critical manoeuvres. Direct observation of console performance.

Level 3

360° Assessment

Behavioural and BRM communication evaluation, bridge leadership, team management and adherence to procedures. Includes structured feedback and individual development plan.

Who Is the Assessment For

The DP Competence Assessment was designed for two offshore market audiences. The first is shipowners, operators and service providers who hire or promote DPOs and need an independent technical evaluation before deploying the professional on a DP2 or DP3 unit. HR, operations management and vessel superintendents use the assessment to reduce operational risk, support promotion decisions and meet end-client requirements in crew audits. The second audience is active DPOs — Trainees, Juniors, Seniors and SDPOs — seeking market differentiation, evidence of competence beyond the certificate and a structured development plan for next career steps on AHTS, PSV, FPSO, RSV and DSV vessels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the DP Competence Assessment and the DPO course?

The course trains and qualifies new DPOs under the Nautical Institute scheme. The Competence Assessment evaluates whether a professional already in service meets the technical, practical and behavioural standard expected by the operation. They are complementary products with distinct goals.

What are the 3 Assessment levels?

Level 1 is the Theoretical Assessment, covering DP fundamentals, sensors, redundancy and procedures. Level 2 is the Practical in a Full Mission simulator, with failure scenarios and decision-making. Level 3 is the 360°, evaluating behavioural competencies, BRM communication and bridge leadership.

Can I contract a single level?

Yes. Each level can be applied alone or together, depending on the objective — hiring, internal promotion, development plan or crew competence audit.

Who conducts the assessment?

The board is made up of senior DPOs and accredited instructors with operational experience on DP2 and DP3 vessels in the Brazilian and international offshore market. Every assessment follows a documented and auditable rubric.

How does the final report delivered to the company work?

The company receives an executive report with scoring by assessed dimension, identification of technical gaps, training recommendations and a final opinion on adherence to the role profile. The document can be used in HR processes, promotion and client audits.

Does the Assessment replace certifications such as the Nautical Institute?

No. The Assessment does not issue DPO certification but evaluates the professional’s actual competence. It complements formal certifications, evidencing operational proficiency beyond what the certificate alone indicates.

Is the Assessment also useful for independent DPOs who want to stand out?

Yes. Professionals seeking differentiation in hiring processes can request the Assessment to evidence technical and behavioural competence, receiving an individual report that can be presented to employers and shipowners.
